Wood Energy Study

Woodlands across the Glasgow and Clyde Valley (GCV) area have considerable potential to be managed for wood energy.

Woodland cover in the area currently extends to 53,000 hectares, and is expected to grow in the future, but currently very little is actively managed for public benefit.

North and South Lanarkshire offer the greatest opportunity for management with 75% of all GCV woodland existing in these authorities.

The GCV Green Network Partnership aims to make a significant contribution toward the development of a vibrant wood energy sector through the Green Network Wood Energy Strategy.

The Strategy provides recommendations which offer an opportunity to develop best practice in sustainable woodland management. Recommendations also identify the economic potential of woodlands through:
  • Opportunities for organisations to switch to woodfuel based energy systems
  • The potential for organisations to contribute to the woodfuel supply chain
  • The development of plans for the installation of a cluster of woodfuel installations in public buildings
  • The development of business models for woodfuel production from public woodlands
  • A Biomass Advice Network to promote the take-up of woodfuel opportunities

The Way Forward

The Wood Energy steering group is working to deliver the recommendations of the Green Network Wood Energy strategy. Two initiatives are being supported:

  • Lanarkshire Wood Energy Project
  • Regional Biomass Advice Network
