Ravenscraig Wider Linkages

The need to link Ravenscraig to the Wider Green Network emerged as a strategic priority in the Ravenscraig Green Network Strategy.

The regeneration of the Ravenscraig site is one of the largest projects of its kind in Europe. In tandem with the ‘hard’ redevelopment works, in the form of infrastructure, housing and commercial development, the creation of a robust, high quality Green Network will be fundamental to the success of the project.

Only by developing sustainable links between new and existing communities, access networks, habitat resources and key urban, recreational and environmental sites in North and South Lanarkshire can Ravenscraig be effectively integrated into the social, economic and environmental fabric of the surrounding area.

Commissioned by North Lanarkshire Council in 2009, the Ravenscraig Wider Linkages report

  • Identifies 24 significant and valuable strategic linkages that will open up an extensive public access network across the region

  • Provides a brief overview of the purpose and function of each linkage, including:
    • contextual and detailed maps,
    • photographic records of issues identified, and
    • outline costs for proposed improvements
  • Proposes a flexible evaluation tool to help prioritise the routes in terms of a range of criteria

The outcomes from this study will help to embed Ravenscraig into the Wider Green Network, creating a conduit for people to access, use and benefit from a range of quality greenspace resources.
