Greenspace Mapping (EDC)

In 2004 a pilot study was carried out to map open space in the Glasgow and Clyde Valley (GCV) area based on the ‘types’ of greenspace as set out in Planning Advice Note 65 (Planning and Open Space).

The pilot study was supported by Scottish Natural Heritage, Forestry Commission Scotland and the GCV Structure Plan Joint Committee. The process used Aerial Photo Interpretation (API) to identify different ‘types’ of open space which were then mapped on Geographical Information Systems (GIS).

Since 2004 the method used for the API process has been clarified, primarily through work done by Greenspace Scotland.  Additionally, some local authorities across the GCV have been undertaking open space audits using their own identified ‘types’ of open space.

Consequently, the Partnership realised the need to make the mapping process more robust and standardised by creating a useable tool which could, in practice, be used across the region.

In 2008 East Dunbartonshire Council (EDC) were about to revise their open space audit and it was felt that this was the right time to undertake a Greenspace Mapping study.

The study sought to overlay quality and accessibility assessments into the GIS dataset. The mapping process was completed using the new approach to API, local knowledge, and use of a common set of open space ‘types’.

The study will be used to highlight the benefits of this mapping approach to other local authorities.

The aims of the study were to:

  • Make the greenspace map a useable tool for EDC;
  • Use the Greenspace Quality Guide to merge qualitative assessments into the process; and
  • By mapping travelling distances, integrate accessibility into the process.

EDC officers were closely involved in the greenspace mapping process and in reviewing the outputs. The completed work now forms the basis of the council’s most recent iteration of their greenspace audit.

The approach demonstrated through this study is one the Partnership would like to promote and will be actively promoting to other authorities as good practice.
