Pollokshaws

Pollokshaws lies 3 miles to the south of Glasgow City Centre and comprises a mix of industrial, retail and office premises and residential housing including several high rise flats.   The study area covers approximately 62 hectares and has several watercourses running through it.  It is within close proximity to Pollok Country Park however the heavily trafficked Pollokshaws road acts as a substantial barrier to its access.

Historically the area was a distinct and thriving community with shops, businesses, tenements and an economy driven by the textile industry.  However, restructure in the 50s saw a dramatic change to the urban structure with the construction of 15 tower blocks, a new shopping precinct and two large factories on the banks of the White Cart River all of which served to disconnect the community from the river.

The Design Study has sought to address these issues and re-create a thriving and liveable place by:

  • Unlocking the potential of the White Cart as a recreational, amenity and wildlife resource
  • Reinforcing the historic fabric by focussing attention on a number of significant historic buildings
  • Reconnecting Pollokshaws with Pollok Park via the White Cart
  • Defining character areas as the framework for future development and restructure which have the water courses and public open space at their heart

The Design sets out a Vision for Pollokshaws to re-establish itself as a local Burgh within the City of Glasgow which offers quality workspace, living space and open space.
