The study area lies a kilometre or so to the south west of Johnstone Town Centre but feels disconnected from it. Approximately half of the site is urbanised, largely consisting of residential dwellings including terraced and semi-detached housing and high rise flats. There are also significant areas of greenspace including a large public park, woodlands and a golf course.
The area is hydrologically complex and has suffered heavily from flooding in the past. However, it has been the subject of extensive hydrological analysis and the Design Study benefited significantly from this.
Johnstone South West will be the subject of restructure and new development over the coming decades. However, rather than this happen in a piecemeal and non-integrated way , the Design Study sets out a framework for phased and managed restructure in which each phase contributes to the holistic placemaking and water management vision for the area.
