Jackton and the Gill Burn Valley

Jackton and the Gill Burn Valley is one of six Community Growth Areas in South Lanarkshire and is a greenfield site on the south western edge of East Kilbride.   The site is 140 hectares and is intended to accommodate in the region of 2,500 new homes.

The site slopes significantly and has the Gill Burn flowing through it; factors which provide the basic constraints and, more importantly, opportunities which guide the Design Study.   The study is firstly based on the foundations of fully understanding the site topography and water journey and the development of a Surface Water Management Plan in response to that analysis.

This hydrological analysis, complimented by habitat network modelling, then informs how people and wildlife might move through a new development.  The layout, structure and densities of housing were developed in response to the primary drivers of the Green Infrastructure and the sites relationship with the existing conurbation and the surrounding landscape.

The Jackton and the Gill Burn Valley Design Study is an exemplar of the placemaking process in which the specifics of the site are fully analysed and understood and translated into a design which celebrates the uniqueness of that place.
