Cowlairs Urban Village

The Cowlairs site is located to the north of Glasgow City Centre covering approximately 30 hectares and is owned by City Property (Glasgow) LLP.  In comparison with surrounding landscape it sits very high and forms a raised plateau commanding superb views of the city and the Campsie Fells.

There are no water courses running through the site, although the Forth & Clyde Canal passes close to its south western edge.  Opportunities for discharge therefore are severely limited and have given the study the primary aim of making the area self-sustaining and contained with respect to surface water management.  This will be the key to unlocking the sites developable potential while delivering additional multiple benefits in terms of habitat creation, safe off-road routes, multi-functional open space and an aesthetically diverse living environment.

The two fundamental considerations of topography and surface water management have therefore been central to the design layout and housing type and densities and the resultant vision for a unique and sustainable urban village.
