Forth & Clyde Canal Environment Framework Tool

forthclyde_web

The Forth & Clyde Canal is a strategically important component of the Central Scotland Green Network delivering a range of benefits to the residents and visitors to the region.

British Waterways Scotland, Glasgow City Council and the GCV Green Network Partnership collectively recognised that the pressure for development and land use change along the Forth & Clyde Canal Corridor within Glasgow, unless planned for and managed in a holistic and strategic way, had the potential to adversely impact on its natural and cultural heritage, greenspace, access and landscape value.

The three organisations formed a Steering Group to commission and oversee the development of a GIS based decision support tool for planners and land managers.  The tool will give equal consideration to the value of the less tangible benefits the canal corridor provides during planning and regeneration processes.

The output from this process is the GIS based Canal Environment Framework Tool (CEFT).  The tool is in the final stages of development which will be followed by promotion and dissemination to those involved decision making relating the corridor with ultimate aim of mainstreaming it into everyday working practices.
