Connecting Our Quality Spaces

The Ferguslie Park Green Network Strategy was one of the Partnership’s first pieces of work looking at how the Green Network can be delivered at neighbourhood level.

Although there are many hurdles to creating a sustainable Green Network in Ferguslie Park it offers the opportunity to deliver a positive demonstration project in an isolated area still suffering from a sense of exclusion and deprivation.

Outdoor opportunities for play and recreation are limited and the area has a high proportion of bleak vacant land offering little to attract biodiversity.

However, delivery of the Ferguslie Park Green Network will create a more positive image for the area through the enhancement of local greenspace involving the local community.

Completed in 2008, the Ferguslie Park Green Network Strategy identifies several opportunities to address existing environmental issues in the area. Opportunities exist to:

• Bring to life the high quality design features once evident at Glencoats Park to benefit residents
• Develop Barochan Greenspace for allotments, an orchard, a plant nursery and wildlife garden
• Create a light and sound garden at the Tannahill Centre building community capacity
• Encourage community empowerment & ownership
• Develop safe accessible walking and cycling routes within and beyond the community
• Transform open space at North Candren for biodiversity and recreational purposes

Project partners ares working to deliver the recommendations of the Ferguslie Park Green Network Strategy. Several studies have been commissioned to take things forward.
