North Glasgow

Open Space Framework

The North Glasgow Open Space Framework study area comprises the two Local Community Planning Partnership (LCPP) areas, Maryhill/Kelvin and Canal & Glasgow North East.  Within the study area there are a range of organisations and agencies which deliver open space related activity.

These organisations recognised that a more co-ordinated approach to delivery of activities and services would:
  • Be a more efficient use of resources;
  • Deliver better outcomes for individual organisations; and
  • Ultimately provide a higher quality of open space resource for the residents of North Glasgow.

Consequently the North Glasgow Open Space and Environment Group (NGOS&EG) was formed, bringing together all relative parties including the Glasgow & Clyde Valley (GCV) Green Network Partnership. The Group will work to discuss and set priorities and to oversee the allocation of resources across North Glasgow.

The Partnership was keen to assist the NGOS&EG by setting a framework for the group to operate within, provide tools to help set priorities and assist with the process of gathering baseline information.

The following elements were developed and are being applied:
  • A written operating and reporting framework for the group;
  • Community consultation to guide the setting of priorities;
  • A multi-criteria scoring matrix against which to score and set priorities.
  • Qualitative assessments of key sites throughout the area; and
  • A database of organisations active within North Glasgow including their area of interest/expertise and associated funding;

The outputs from the study informed a development day for the group which started to set collective priorities for the forthcoming year.

The model of the NGOS&EG has been seen to work well and is being replicated across the city.  The Partnership will continue to offer support in North Glasgow as well as promoting this approach and the decision support tools for other groups to benefit from.
