Policy Context

Scotland’s National Planning Framework 2 (NPF2) recognises that strategic planning for city regions provide the opportunity to develop extensive Green Networks.

Paragraph 202 in the NPF2 document states “the Glasgow and Clyde Valley Green Network Partnership is taking forward a programme of greenspace enhancements designed to promote healthier lifestyles, better environments, greater biodiversity, stronger communities and economic opportunity’.

The GCV Green Network will connect our inner urban areas with their surrounding rural environments. This will provide a wide range of social, health, economic and environmental benefits. The benefits of the GCV Green Network match the Scottish Government’s strategic objectives and national outcomes. By delivering these outcomes, or benefits, the GCV Green Network will help deliver the Government’s aim of sustained growth.

At a local level the outcomes of the GCV Green Network programme will help local authorities meet their Single Outcome Agreements (SOA’s). The GCV Green Network programme is supported at national, regional and at local level.

International Context

Green Networks provide a range of benefits particularly in today’s international context helping to address a variety of sustainability issues. For example, Green Networks can provide some solutions helping to reduce the effects of climate change. See our Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems project for more. Green Networks can also contribute to sustainable travel, biodiversity enhancement through habitat networks, and stronger more sustainable communities.

The GCV Green Network programme is a highly ambitious but achievable 21st Century Vision. By achieving the Vision, the GCV Green Network will make the Glasgow metropolitan region a greener more attractive place for people, business and wildlife.
